Current World Condition
73The world is currently journeying through an extremely rugged road, wherein, no one really knows what is going to happen next. There is war in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and in the inlands of different countries. Inside religious sanctuaries, in an Austrian Sikh temple for instance, violence took place. Even royalties are no longer safe as security in Buckingham Palace was allegedly breached. Political turmoil remains as one of the biggest threats on humanity given the existing and on going nuclear activities. Morality has plunged so deep. The nature is at the brink of destruction. Economic crisis has put heavier burdens upon every consumer. Add to that the growing number of epidemic, having Influenza A (H1N1) the latest.
Where is this world leading us? Many ask this question. This has been lingering in my mind due to a scene I saw with my very eyes. As I was sitting on a bench, inside a hospital, waiting for a test result, a man stormed in carrying a young woman in his arms. Seeing the condition of the patient, doctors and nurses quickly rushed to help. After only a few minutes, an ambulance came with sirens wailing. I can almost hear the fast heartbeats inside the scrub prints of those assisting the emergency situation. These are but two cases, and yet, the medical scrubs of these people seem to no longer touch a seat. What if all the problems in the world today bear the most severe results? How many lives will be in danger or lost? And how are we going to handle everything?
Unending War
Efforts are being made to alleviate societal problems, so that the worst don’t happen. However, there is little or no positive effect. The United Nations had been campaigning for world peace among its subjects. It pushes its members to beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears, so that no nation will lift up sword against another nation. But they continue to learn war, devising the deadliest weapons and strengthening their military power to prepare defeating others. Hence, battles between the very members of the UN remain unresolved.
Irreconcilable Religious Differences
So much death and bloodshed is apparent as results of religious differences. Reconciliation between the parties involved seems to be impossible. Despite the efforts of religious leaders to work things out along with the leaders of the governments, waging of wars remains to be unavoidable. There are battles between Muslims and Christians, and wars among members of the same religion. True brotherhood has never been real. If there is any organization or international brotherhood where love for each other is being pursued, everybody must go and become a member immediately.
Imperfect Leaders and Governments
Ousting leaders, killing leaders, rebuking leaders, and giving leaders into the hands of the enemies are a common scene. These happen because no society or land has been satisfied with any leader or any form of government as a whole. Political issues aggravate the situation. And when other countries get involved with the problem, tension becomes even greater.
Technological Threats
In the age of modern technology, many of man’s problems will be solved; and many of their questions will be answered. What is happening, though, is the contrary. As the technology improves, more and more questions add up, and more intricate problems come. The threats of the most deadly weapons are the fruits of modern technology. Even the seemingly non-dangerous gadgets bridge criminals to victims. The supposedly effective ways of curing disease become the cause of even complex complications. People cannot rely on new technology really. Still we are hoping that, at some point, the discoveries of scientists will truly be beneficial on all aspects.
Moral Breakdown
Access to pornographic materials is blocked only by a thin sheet of plastic cover. Children of the new generation have lost good values even with regards to their relationship with parents. Respect for life now comes to be an individual decision, and no longer a standard that everyone must try to reach. You can just picture an even worse situation in the next 20 years.
Environmental Imbalance
In every corner of the Earth, the effect of global warming is very much evident. Polar bears and penguins in the Polar Regions are slowly losing habitat. Flood has become greater in many countries. The ozone layer is severely depleted. Earthquakes, storms, and other natural disasters have become stronger. And the very soil has lost nutrients. All of which partake in the many lives lost each year. In spite what is happening, many are still hopeful. Dawa Steven Sherpa, a leader of Eco Everest Expeditions, recently encouraged mountaineers to bring down trash that they found in the mountain with the “Cash for Trash” program. The organization offers 100 Rupees for every kilo of trash brought down.
Food and Economic Crisis
In different lands, the battle does not involve weapons. It is about access to food. 15 million children die each year due to starvation, and the global economic crisis is magnifying the condition. Power hungry people are making things worse for the poor. If they allocate the money spent on the artillery and weaponry, more stomach will stop from grumbling. Yes, a price of just a single missile can feed a school of hungry children everyday, at least with lunch, for 5 years.
Health Plagues
Health problems that have first struck the world decades ago continue spreading. AIDS, being the most prevalent, has infected millions worldwide; even people who are in scrub uniforms are not exempted. Malaria also remains one of the most dreaded diseases. As to the Influenza A (H1N1) infection also known as swine flu, there are 12, 515 cases in 46 countries, including 91 deaths. What else is next?
